The Link Between Overweight, Belly Fat, and High Blood Sugar

It's a topic many people avoid because it can be uncomfortable to talk about or think about when it impacts us personally.

There is a direct link between being overweight, belly fat, and high blood sugar - Insulin resistance, specifically pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes.

In the USA alone, 73.6% of adults aged 20 and over, are now considered overweight or obese.

Throughout the years, our poor diets - high in processed foods and too much refined sugar, along with our sedentary lifestyles (reduced physical activity or exercise), have led to this epidemic.

Over 88 million American adults now have pre-diabetes (higher than normal blood sugar – That’s 1 in 3 adults! Of those 88 million, more than 80% of them don’t even know they have higher than normal blood sugar (yet). Without intervention, many with pre-diabetes will develop type 2 diabetes.

Another 31 million American adults already have type 2 diabetes - high blood sugar (Insulin resistant).

To further complicate things, 89% of people with high blood sugar are also overweight.

Research has shown that people who carry more weight, particularly around the belly, are more insulin resistant, and may struggle to achieve healthy blood sugar levels.

Type 2 diabetes can also lead to other serious health complications, including:

Heart disease, stroke, hypertension (high blood pressure), eye problems and blindness, kidney disease, nervous system complications (neuropathy), amputations, dental disease, & skin issues.

The good news is, type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes can also be managed naturally, and even reversed.

One of the ways to reverse high blood sugar naturally is through weight loss, and in particular, losing belly fat.

You don’t need to lose that much to make a difference for your health. One study found that people with high blood sugar improved their blood sugar control when they lost as little as 2% of their body weight.

And research shows that losing just 5% of your extra weight will make you less likely to get heart disease by improving blood pressure, blood sugar, and HDL cholesterol (the good kind).

Start by focusing on losing that 5% and keeping it off.

Later, you can build from that success. Studies have shown that lifestyle changes such as increased physical activity, eating healthier, and weight loss are the most effective and safest ways to manage or reverse high blood sugar.

If you drop even 10 or 15 pounds, that has health perks, such as:

Lower blood sugar
Lower blood pressure
Better cholesterol levels
Less stress on your hips, knees, ankles, and feet
More energy

After you've lost that first 5%, press on if you need to. To see even more improvements, like a lower risk of heart disease and improved blood sugar over the long term, aim to drop 10% to 15% of your body weight.

Losing this amount of body weight can also be more noticeable. You may lose some inches from your waist, drop pants sizes, or just feel better.

These changes can motivate you to continue shedding pounds if applicable.
